Hitachi Data Systems Launches First Asia Pacific DC
Hitachi Data Systems, the IT storage systems subsidiary of Hitachi, announced the launch of its Asia Pacific Distribution Centre on June 2, Representing an investment of over S$4.6 million (US$3.3 million), the facility sited in Singapore's Airport Logistics Park (ALPS) will cater for a complete range of products including Hitachi Universal Storage Platform V & VM and Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2000 series. The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB), senior government officials, customers and partners.
Previously, customer orders were assembled, configured and distributed out of the Indianapolis Distribution Centre and delivered by air transport to Japan before being shipped out to customers in Asia Pacific. Having a facility in Singapore will stream line operations and reduce transportation and warehousing costs by virtue of being closer to customer locations and Hitachi Japan, the product supplier. The decrease in transportation timewill also ensure timely configuration of Hitachi Data Storage products to specific customer requirements. The main storage equipment in the DC was provided by SSI Schaefer, specifically, selective pallet racking with wire mesh decking and R3000 shelving systems.
"Caring for the environment has never been so critical. The Asia Pacific Distribution Centre will contribute significantly to the cause of environment protection by reducing power consumption and our overall carbon footprint. One of the unique features of the facility is specially manufactured tools to help the staff pack, un-pack and install storage equipment above 25 kg," said Frans van Rijn, senior vice president global supply chain, CLO, Hitachi Data Systems.
